Since I will be attending The Bookworm Box signing on December 10th in Sulpher Springs, Texas, I wanted to check a few more books off of my TBR list from authors attending the signing. Brittainy C. Cherry is one of the authors attending that I’m anxious to have the chance to meet. I read the first book of her Elements series earlier this year, and have had The Fire Between High & Lo sitting on my Kindle app even before I read The Air He Breathes.
“You’re still the air in my lungs. You’re still my greatest high. And I am still truly, madly, painfully in love with you. And I don’t think I’ll ever know how to stop.”
The Fire Between High and Lo is a sweet romance story of a girl and boy who become the best of friends after a moment of desperation. They worry if their friendship turns into more that it my be ruined and irreparable, but they hope for the best anyway. As they feared, their different worlds and outside influences threaten to tear their relationship apart.
After reading The Air He Breathes, I had high hopes for the second book of this series, because I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book. However, I was slightly disappointed with this novel. I found the story to be lacking something for me, possibly that I didn’t feel a personal connection to any of the characters. In fact, just days after reading this book, I am struggling to remember the actual names of the characters. They didn’t seem resonate with me, though I did like the explanation behind their nicknames. I would also like to point out, this book deals with the subject of addiction, which may be a trigger for some. The storyline felt rather repetitive and cheesy in parts, and overall was a bit of a let down. The writing was not bad in any way, but I personally felt the story was not quite as hashed out as it could have been. As much as I hate to say it, some of the parts seemed like they were repeated solely for the word count. It needed a bit more substance and feeling. I’m definitely in the minority with my opinion, because Brittainy the beloved author of several books, and a fantastic writer and storyteller. This story was one that simply fell flat for my taste. Overall, I would give it 3 stars, being that it was simply okay for me. I am looking forward to jumping into the third installment of the Elements series, The Silent Waters soon. I have heard nothing but raving reviews for this book, so I’m sure this series will be redeemed in my eyes soon.
Note: While this is a series, the books can be read as standalones.
